Let me preface this by saying, if you like chicken and beef and have been dreaming of that for your day, please go for it. I’ve had some filets at weddings that were mind-blowingly good, and, as a guest,  I wasn’t mad at all they didn’t go the “unique” route. Some of us just feel more at home with different food though, so why the heck not have that on your day?!

I would think about the cuisine(s) that your fiancé and you are both in love with. I would also think about doing a cuisine that was significant for your relationship i.e. your first date was tacos, so you want to have that at your wedding. There really isn’t much to limit you. Almost every cuisine caters or has options for large parties.

Just make sure when you’re talking to potential food vendors that they are set up to serve people, decorate a buffet stand, etc. If they haven’t done weddings before and will only be dropping off the food, you’ll likely need to rent the right food warmers (or make sure the venue can take care of it) as well as pay for servers. Keep in mind all that hassle when you talk to restaurants. If it’s important to you to have that specific place, then go for it. Just get super in on the details and make sure you have someone that can coordinate or act as the onsite catering manager.

Before I go into the types of foods remember that you can also just choose these themes for the cocktail hour and have “normal food” for dinner. It’s a little easier to coordinate that way + mini foods are precious. Finally, think about how you’d want this food to read your guests: is it family style, is it served plates, is it DIY, is there someone onsite serving people? You’ve got all the options!

This is largely based on your location, so I can’t really give you specific ideas. You probably need at least two options if food trucks are all you’re doing for dinner, or the option to get a special meal (and let you know on their RSVP) if they don’t like/can’t eat the food truck food.

10. Fast food

14. Sushi

Again, totally based on your preference. I would make sure there are a lot of options, because sushi is not one-size-fits-all. I also would add a non-seafood meal option and be sure to have some additional substance (maybe a lo mein dish) so that guests have something that soaks up their alcohol.

15. Potluck

This is a totally crazy idea, but if you’re on a budget or are only having 10-50 people at your wedding, you could invite your guests to bring some sort of dish. I would definitely have a theme that they can rally behind and I would make sure to provide at least 5 dishes yourself so that there is substance. It could be a fun way to incorporate family recipes and traditions from both sides, but it could also be a total disaster… so just be careful!
